About Mercury News

The San Jose Mercury News is an American newspaper published in San Jose, California. It is owned by MediaNews Group. Its headquarters and printing plant are located in North San Jose next to the Nimitz (Interstate 880) freeway. The Mercury News covers all other newspapers in the Bay Area of San Francisco owned by Media News Group, including the Oakland Tribune, Contra Costa Times, Marin Independent Journal, San Mateo County Times, Santa Cruz Sentinel, and 10 other local newspapers, each of which are branded "an edition of the San Jose Mercury News," which explains the high circulation newspaper. The San Jose Mercury was founded in 1851 as the San Jose Weekly Visitor, while the San Jose News was founded in 1883. In 1942, Mercury purchased the News and continued to publish both papers, with Mercury as the morning paper and the News as the evening paper. In 1983, the papers merged in the San Jose Mercury News, with morning and afternoon editions. The afternoon edition was later abandoned. The newspaper claims that the name "Mercury" refers to the importance of the industry of mercury during the California Gold Rush. The name has a double meaning, since Mercury is the Roman messenger of the gods and the god of commerce and thieves, known for its speed, and the name of Mercury is commonly used in newspapers without the association of mineral mercury .

Due to its location in Silicon Valley, the Mercury News has covered many of the key events in the history of computing.
