About The Province
The Calgary Herald is an anglophone Canadian newspaper published in Calgary, Alberta. a biggest competitor is the Calgary Sun.
First published on August 31, 1883 by Andrew Armour and Thomas Braden under the name of The Calgary Herald, Mining and Rance Advocate and General Advertiser, begins as a four-page weekly was printed by hand. The distribution was small (up a tent located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers was in office). In 1885, the Herald became a daily newspaper, but not until the fall of 1983 begins to be published 7 days a week. Now comes in the morning, but until August 1985 was an evening paper. In November 2000, it acquired Southam Newspapers (now CanWest News Services subsidiary of CanWest Global Communications).
The Herald also publishes Neighbours, a weekly community newspaper that is distributed along with the Herald in parts of Calgary. In spring 2005, the Herald joined several subsidiaries of CanWest Global to launch Dose, a free newspaper that is aimed at young people aged 18 to 35 who use public transportation daily.
